How to hold a space clearing ceremony in your home. Part 2: The ceremony

This is the second part of a two part series on How to hold a space clearing ceremony in your home. For part one of this series, go here. This post & video will cover the structure and content of the ceremony itself.

DAY OF THE CEREMONY

Prepare a central altar.

  • Your house should be clean, tidy and organised by the time the day of the ceremony comes around.
  • Take the time now to start putting together your central altar or temenos.
  • This is the focal point of the ceremony and a working space, so you can place the tools you’ll be using here and any other sacred/symbolic objects that you’d like to include.
  • Consider incorporating: fabric, candles (at least one), crystals, tools for clearing, a symbolic object from each person that represents the energy they are calling in, statues of deities, flowers, stones or other objects to mark each of the four directions and the centre.

Before you begin

Smudge, clear and ground participants
  • Before beginning the ceremony, it helps to create a bridge from everyday normal reality into the ceremonial space.
  • A great way to do this is by smudging each participant to clear their energy field. You can use white sage or palo santo.
  • I then took the participants through a 5 minute grounding and clearing meditation. Begin by creating a strong connection from the base chakra into the earth, then draw this grounding and calming earth energy up through the central channel of the energy body to the crown. Then from the crown, drawing bright white light down through the body and back into the earth.
  • Everyone is now clear, present and ready to begin.

Opening the Ceremony

Welcome friends & participants
  • Take a moment to acknowledge and thank your participants for attending.
Acknowledgement of traditional land owners
  • Our houses exist on land that belongs to the indigenous people of our country, so for me, I felt that it was really important to acknowledge this.
  • Research the name of the clan that occupied your land and incorporate it into a short and heartfelt statement. Here’s the one I used:
    • ‘We acknowledge and pay our deep respects to the indigenous custodians of this land, the Jeringa people of the Wodi Wodi clan. We honour the Elders, past, present and emerging.
Create an energetic container for the ceremony
  • Call in the medicine wheel or elements/directions or angels/spirit guides – whatever you resonate with.
  • What we are doing here is creating a sacred energetic container for the ceremony as well as calling in support from spirit – whatever form that takes for you.
  • For me, the medicine wheel is the structure that I feel most resonant with. I researched ceremonial wording and adding in my own bits. Here’s the wording I used, based on brilliant info found on Jane Hardwick-Collings Moonsong website.
CALLING IN THE DIRECTIONS

(Start in the east and move anti-clockwise in Southern Hemisphere).

We invoke the direction of the East.
Where the sun rises.
The direction of spiritual birth and awakening.
The realm of the child and young adulthoodhood.
The energy of the season of Spring and new beginnings.
Here, we call on the presence of the great Eagle, holder of the energy of the East
May the energy of the East be with us today.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

We invoke the direction of the North.
The direction associated with life force,
the vitality that arises when the heart opens.
The realm of the mother and father.
The energy of the season of Summer and of full bloom.
Here, we call upon the presence of Kianga, the all powerful Kangaroo and holder of the energy of the north.
May the energy of the North be with us.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

We invoke the direction of the West.
The direction where the sun sets,
the place of harvest and letting go.
The realm of the maga and magus.
The energy of the season of Autumn. Here, we call upon the presence of Ssarne, the snake, holder of the energy of the west.
I call the qualities of the West be with us.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

We invoke the direction of the South.
The direction of universal wisdom, purity and clarity.
The realm of the crone and the wise man
The energy of the season of Winter.
Here, we call upon the presence of Marumna, the almighty whale and holder of the energy of the South.
I call the qualities of the South be with us.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

We call forth the spirit of Mother Earth.
Your powers of regeneration, forgiveness, unconditional love and pure bounty.

We thank you and humbly ask for your wisdom and blessings here today
Please join us spirit of Mother Earth.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

We call forth the spirit of Father Sky.
The realms that exist beyond all knowing and understanding.

We thank you and humbly ask for your wisdom and blessings here today.
Please join us spirit of Father Sky.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

I invoke the Centre.
The space of the all, right here, right now and forever.

The space of stillness and presence.
I call the qualities of the Centre be with us.

AHO (group repeats AHO)

Clearing

This first part of the ceremony is focused on clearing out old, heavy and stagnant energy from your home.

Home owner to clearly state what it is they wish to clear.
  • We opened the clearing by speaking freely about the events leading up to the ceremony, why we decided to do the clearing ceremony and specifically what we wanted to clear. Both my partner and I spoke casually to the group so they had a clear understanding of context.
Each person selects or is allocated a clearing tool
  • This takes care of the practical side of things – figuring out who uses what for the clearing component.
  • For our clearing we used: Shamanic Drum, large Tibetan singing bowl, white sage, salt water spray and white light clearing spray (made by a friend).
  • Tip: I prefer to use sound vibrations with a deeper tone for the clearing to help break up the energy. Drumming or digeridoo is perfect for this.
  • Once everyone knows what they are using, we read out the clearing statement.
Clearing statement
  • This is a pre-written statement designed to declare our intention for the clearing within the ceremonial setting.
  • We asked each participant to close their eyes while we read the statement and to hold this intention throughout the clearing activities.
  • Here’s the wording I prepared:
    • Divine Spirit, the great goddess, ancestors, spirit guides, and friends, we call upon your presence and assistance as we cleanse + clear our home today. We hold deep reverence in our hearts for the experiences of the past 12 months. We emerge from this time better people, our hearts opened wider and ready to embrace the new. Please help us to clear and remove energies in our home relating to:
      • List specific things unique to your situation, like grief, sadness, confusion, etcThen include any of the following that fits for you:
      • Negative emotional and energetic imprints
      • Stagnant, stale and old energy that no longer serves who we are and where we are heading.
      • Energy that does not belong to us.
      • Negative entities and spirits
      • All energies that have served their purpose and are no longer useful.
      • All of this and more that lies beyond our conscious awareness, for the greater good of all.
      • Please journey with us as we cleanse our home now.
Move anti-clockwise around the house
  • From the altar you’ve created, begin to move in single file in an anti-clockwise direction, following the walls of your house so you enter every room.
  • Each person uses the tool they’ve been allocated along with their focus and intention to begin to clear and disperse the energy to be cleared.
  • TIP: pay special attention to the corners of each room in your home as this is where heavy and dense energy tends to accumulate.
  • Circle all the way through the house (upstairs and downstairs) until you arrive back at the central altar.
White Light Clearing Visualisation
  • To complete the clearing process, I like to then lead the group through a short white light clearing meditation.
  • The visualisation consists of:
    • imagining the roof of the home is completely removed.
    • seeing and feeling bright white light completely flooding the home, including through furniture, walls and floors of the home.
    • Then imagining this white light begins, slowly at first, moving in an anti-clockwise direction.
    • As it continues to move in a circle, it starts to form a funnel.
    • This funnel moves faster and faster and faster.
    • The speed and momentum of this funnel collects all energetic debris that was dislodged during the clearing.
    • Imagine this funnel connecting with the earth underneath the house.
    • The earth opens up and absorbs the content of the white light funnel, including all the old energy you’ve cleared and transmutes it.

Your house is now cleared!

Invocation

This second part of the ceremony is when we intentionally declare and call in (invoke) the types of energy and experiences to support you over the coming period.

Home owner/s to clearly state what it is they wish to invoke
  • Here, my partner and I again spoke casually to the group about what the year ahead for us was going to consist of and the type of energy and experiences we wanted to invite into our lives.
  • This gave the group a clear understanding of our intentions for the year ahead.
Each person selects or is allocated an invocation tool
  • For the invocation part of the ceremony we chose sound vibration with a higher frequency (Tibetan Bells), essential oils diluted into a spray bottle, Palo Santo smudge, and white light (channelled by a healer friend).
  • We decided who what going to use what before we read out the invocation statement.
Invocation statement
  • This is another pre-written statement covering precisely the types of energy and experiences we wanted to invite into our home and our lives.
  • Again, the group was asked to close their eyes while we read the statement out loud and to hold this intention as we conducted the invocation part of the ceremony.
  • TIP: in the following invocation statement I called upon the Goddess Hestia to infuse her energy into our home. If a particular god/goddess/totem animal/ guardian calls to you – simple replace this wording as appropriate.
  • Here’s the wording I prepared:
    • Divine Spirit, Goddess Hestia, keeper of the sacred flame and hearth of the home, ancestors, spirit guides, and friends, we call upon your assistance to fill our home with joy, vitality, love and abundance. We ask for your assistance and blessings as we call in supportive energy for a harmonious and joyful year ahead.
    • Please help us to invoke energy to hold, guide and support us with
      • List here all of the things you want support with then finish with the following two statements
      • All of this and more that lies beyond our conscious awareness, for the greater good of all.
      • Please journey with us as we invoke this positive energy to fuel our intentions now.
Move clockwise around the house.
  • This time, form a single file and move clockwise around your home beginning from your central altar.
  • Each person uses the invoking tool they’ve selected and their intention to actively invite new and fresh energy into your home.
  • As per the clearing circuit, follow the walls so you weave in and out of each room in your home. This time move in the opposite (clockwise) direction.
  • Continue until you meet back at your central altar.
Four corner blessing (optional)
  • I like to think of a four-corner blessing as taking the intention and energy you’ve invoke and anchoring it into the property surrounding your home.
  • Take stones/crystals/rice from the altar and bury outside in each corner of the house.
  • Read a statement if you feel to.
  • Pay respects to the guardians of your home and give thanks.

Closing

Meditation to fill house with white light.
  • To complete the ceremony consider leading another guided visualisation (similar to the one above) to fill the house with white/golden cosmic light or whatever resonates for you.
  • This is about anchoring the energy you’ve invoked into your home and a nice way to close out the ceremony.

Close the circle.
  • Depending on how you opened and created sacred space for your ceremony, conduct a short completion that will ‘undo’ the sacred container.
  • Do this in the opposite direction to which you invoked it (usually anti-clockwise).
  • If you used the medicine wheel or something similar, acknowledge and thank the presence of each direction for their support.
  • Thank your treasured participants for their energy, focus and attention.
  • State simply ‘The Ceremony is now complete’.
  • Extinguish any candles.

Celebrate and ground

  • Believe it or not, a ceremony of this type can really take it out of you. For us all up, it took about 2 hours.
  • Think ahead and have some food and drink prepared so everyone can replenish themselves afterwards.
  • Relax and chat and enjoy your new high-vibing space.
  • Then have a little lie down – you’ll need it!
  • TIP: I love to keep the windows open for as long as possible after the ceremony to allow fresh air to circulate.

So that’s it!
